Patience - Benefits of - Yoga Palm Beach

Meditation And Patience:

1 – The quality of being patient, as the bearing of provocation, annoyance, misfortune, or pain, without complaint, loss of temper, irritation, or the like.

2 – An ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay: to have patience with a slow learner.

3 – Quiet, steady perseverance; even-tempered care; diligence: to work with patience.

It's been said that patience is a virtue. Why? Here’s one explanation:

Patience is a virtue because it makes us better people. The definition of the word is to tolerate delay. This implies self control and forbearance as opposed to wanting what we want when we want it. How many times have we jumped the gun and found out it would have been better to tolerate delay or to have had self control?

What are the benefits of being patient? Recent studies have found the following:

Benefits of Meditation in Developing Patience

1 – Reduces stress levels. When you learn and practice patience you don’t get as angry, stressed or overwhelmed.

2 – Results in better decision making. Take the time to assess the situation, see the big picture, and weigh any pros and cons. The chances of making a big mistake lessen because you avoid making it in haste.

3 – Helps develop understanding, empathy and compassion. Patient people take the time to process what they go through and are able to determine what it takes to overcome obstacles so they are more understanding of others. This can result in better relationships with your spouse, friends and children.

4 – Helps you understand and appreciate the process of growth. Planning, growth, evaluation and measurement all take time, and taking time takes patience.

Meditation helps with paitience, what else can I do:

1 – Develop realistic expectations

2 – Realize that setbacks are only temporary

3 – Employ a problem solving attitude instead of choosing to be a victim

4 – Avoid bitterness

5 – Have faith that you can overcome a difficult situation

6 – Be aware of triggers that cause you to become impatient. If it’s something you can change, take steps to change it. If not, then adjust your attitude and mindset accordingly.

Physicians always recommend meditation for health problems and disorders. It's a proven fact that the regular practice of meditation helps with so many problems. Take some time out to day for your practice. If you are new to meditation we can help, leave a comment and your details and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Yoga Food - Yoga Palm Beach

Yummy Healthy Cheesecake

I've been spending a little bit of time searching online for raw vegan desserts lately (my current passion.

I found this very scrumptious looking recipe. It's one from this blog sweetlyraw.com When you have time go and have a look. There are lots of very inviting raw vegan recipes all of which look beautiful.

Very healthy and delicious. I'm sure you will agree. Perfect Yoga Food.

Raw Caramel Apple Cheesecake

More fall flavors to share today! Who doesn't love the caramel apple combo?! It's a classic and even more perfect for this time of year. For literally years I've wanted to create this recipe. I'm so glad I finally did because it's a keeper. I'm going to make it again for Christmas.

This raw dessert is packed with apples all the way around. Dried apples in the crust, fresh apples in the filling, and both fresh and dried apples in the topping. Hey, I'm just trying to take advantage of Autumn's freshness! Mmmm....

Sweet smooth cheesecake with juicy apple chunks and thick caramel sauce with crunchy pecans on top.

Caramel Apple Cheesecake

Raw - Vegan - Gluten Free

Crust

I used 1/8 teaspoon of cinnamon in my crust, as I wanted it to be a soft background flavor. Use more if you want a more defined flavor. You could do without the dried apples, but they really do create a unique crust that goes so well with the whole cheesecake.

2/3 cup almonds
1/4 cup pitted dates
3 tablespoons finely chopped, packed dried apples
1/8-1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, optional
1/2-1 teaspoon water

Grind the almonds in a food processor.
Add the dates and process together into a dough.
Pulse in the apples, cinnamon, and enough water to create a dough that will hold together when pressed.
Press most of the mixture into two small (3-4") cheesecake pans (I had a bit extra for an "apple nut ball" - chef's treat ;) OR press into a bunch of mini silicone muffin cups.

Filling

The filling is great by itself but if you want a cinnamon swirl, simply remove 3 tablespoons of the blended filling and add 1/2-3/4 teaspoon cinnamon to it. After pouring the filling over the crusts, spoon small blobs of the cinnamon mixture over the filling. Use a chopstick to push the mixture down into the cake and then swirl it around.

2 cups peeled, diced apples
3/4 cup cashews
3 tablespoons maple syrup
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons melted coconut butter
4 tablespoons melted coconut oil
Pinch of salt

Blend the first 5 ingredients until completely smooth.
Add the butter and oil. Blend again to incorporate.
Pour over the crusts.
Chill in the fridge for 12 hours, or in the freezer for 5-6 hours and in the fridge for 1-2 hours before removing the ring.

Caramel

This is the easiest caramel sauce ever and super delish. If you have any of my raw dessert ebooks, you know that I love caramel featuring dates but this easy recipe can be stirred together in a bowl.

1/4 cup maple syrup
2 tablespoons lucuma, sifted
3 1/2 tablespoons almond butter*
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla

Add the maple, almond butter, and vanilla to a small bowl. Sift the lucuma over top. Stir in.

*A note about the almond butter - I use Dastony stone ground almond butter that is basically like silk. Creamier and silkier than any nut butter I've come across. You may have to adjust for consistency if using other brands that are thicker. Maybe 1/2 - 1 tsp water to thin.

Caramel Apple Topping

1 large apple, peeled and diced small
1 tablespoon finely chopped dried apple
Caramel (above)

Toss the apples with enough caramel to suit your liking! Extra caramel can be used to drizzle over other things, or eaten with sliced apples. It won't last long ;)

Great for thanksgiving or Christmas!

Yoga Meditation Retreat 24th November 2012 - Yoga Palm Beach

An Invite to the LAST Yoga Meditation Retreat for 2012
Saturday 24th November
10am start until 4pm

Our Yoga Palm Beach Day Retreats have been alot of fun. Our program and times are flexible but everything manages to flow on nicely.

There will be a talk on the history of yoga and the spiritual side of yoga. We practise a number of meditation techniques, all of which are very simple. And all of which bring peace and tranquillity to the mind and satisfaction and joy to the heart.

These timeless practises are powerful and effective. The techniques are so straight forward and simple that you will find you can easily slot them into your daily routine. You can take the skills that you learn at the yoga meditation retreat and continue with your practise at home. In this way you will be able to keep the yoga meditation experience with you until you have the opportunity to come back and practise with us again. The consistent practise of your meditation will ensure that you  keep experiencing the benefits, all of the health giving benefits for body mind and spirit. You will be less stressed, more focused and more balanced.

We will practise yoga nidra or yoga sleep for deep rejuvenation and rest. This is a very popular class, once you have tried it you will understand why. Check this blog for a post on yoga nidra, also known as guided meditation. Read up on the benefits. I can assure you it's a blissfully relaxing experience. You will feel really great afterwards. This practise helps to release stress, tension, and anxiety. There's alot more to it, so come along and try it for yourself.

We will practise Pranayama or breath awareness. You will learn a few ways of how to practise it and how this lovely practise can benefit you and your family. There will be an explanation of what pranayama means and how this practise is beneficial for both body and mind. All of these yoga practises have many health benefits both physiological as well as psychological.

And of course we couldn't have a yoga and meditation retreat without practising hatha yoga
So, if you are a fan of yoga or even if you have never been to a yoga class before, you will have an opportunity to join in. Come along, stretch and find your yoga breath. What a great experience. All classes are gentle with a bit of a challenging edge. You will be in safe hands, just let the teacher know if you have any body issues. If you are under a doctors care it is always good to talk to your doctor first. Get the go ahead from them to be doubly sure it is safe for you to practise yoga.
One of the meditations we will practise will be a group activity, group meditation to music. This means the singing of sacred yoga mantras with musical instruments. This is a very beautiful and very ancient practise. Getting together and singing
has many health giving benefits, some of which you may have read in the Yoga Palm Beach blog profile. In short singing is very therapeutic, it is good for our cardiovascular system, increases our lung capacity, helps to reduce stress and has a powerful effect on our moods. When we combine singing with yoga meditation it is a very potent combination, you will feel it for sure. You will find that you'll be able to relax into the sound and experience the soothing wave of spiritual energy from the meditation. This will give you the heart connection and deep peace that we are always seeking. It's always a wonderful experience for first timers and continues to get better each time we practise it.

Scalp Neck and Shoulder Massage by Carmen

We all know massage is good for us, it sure feels as though it's doing us the world of good while we're having one. The stress reducing effects can be experienced almost instantly.

Forgiveness - Yoga Palm Beach

Forgiveness

Is good for your heart. One study from the Journal of Behavioural Medicine found forgiveness to be associated with lower heart rate and blood pressure as well as lowering stress levels. This can bring long term health benefits for your heart and overall health.

Practical Steps

So how does one go about forgiving? How do we forgive? We seek to understand rather than judge.

The Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, defines forgivable as “something that you are able to forgive because you understand it.”

  • Jesus Christ demonstrated his understanding of human fallibility when he said on the cross “Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do”.
  • Since humans are not omniscient, or infallible, mistakes are inevitable for all of us.
  • When we understand and accept human fallibility, it becomes much easier to forgive the mistakes of others, and even our own.
  • Make a conscious decision not to seek revenge or nurse a grudge, decide instead to forgive. This conversion of the heart is a critical stage toward forgiveness.
  • Acknowledge that by forgiving you can experience inner healing and move on with life.
  • Try to see things from the other persons perspective.
  • Accept the pain you’ve experienced don't pass it on to others, including the person involved.
  • Choose to extend goodwill and mercy toward the other party, wish for the well being of that person.
  • Realistic acceptance of human fallibility brings the benefits of forgiveness.
Researchers at the University of Tennessee, Drs. Warren Jones and Kathleen Lawler found that harbouring anger and resentment tends to increase blood pressure. Forgiving seems to have overall cardiovascular benefits.

A study conducted at University of Michigan Institute for Social Research found that forgiving others was linked with better self reported mental and physical health.

  • Forgiveness powerfully changes our feelings about the past. Forgiveness does not change the past. But our feelings about the past can change.
  • The amazing benefit of forgiveness is this - When we make peace with the past, forgiveness frees us. We are able to live a better, healthier, and happier life.
  • The rewards and benefits of forgiveness are very practical. Compassionate understanding makes forgiveness possible.
  Benefits of Forgiveness

1. Decrease in heart rate and blood pressure
2. Relief from stress (physical and emotional)
3. Decrease in medication
4. Improved sleep patterns and increased vitality
5. Decreased physical complaints such as tension headaches
6. Reduction in depressive symptoms
7. Deep healing and a greater sense of peace and well-being.
8. Better conflict management
9. An overall improvement in relationships
10. Increase in compassion, altruistic behaviours

Yoga Breath - Practice and benefits

Yoga Breathing
Slow deep breathing helps you relax - At the end of a yoga class the teacher will take the class through a short session of yoga nidra or rest and relaxation. The teacher talks the class through simple breathing techniques, focusing on the breath, slowing the breath down, noticing the breath and so on. Breathing deeply helps you relax. This is also why people are encouraged to breathe deeply when they are angry or upset. Taking deep breaths increases the oxygen flow to your brain which helps keep you calm.

Slow deep breathing may reduce your risk of high blood pressure - Some medical studies show a connection between high blood pressure and shallow, fast breathing. It makes sense then that the faster your breathing rate, the higher your likelihood of suffering from high blood pressure. Consistent practise of hatha yoga is a very healthy habit to develop. There is so much emphasis placed on the importance of breathing and breathing technique that breathing correctly becomes a habit. Simply by taking time each day to be more aware of your breath, trying to breathe slowly and deeply can truly help you lower your risk of high blood pressure.

Slow deep breathing can increase your energy level - If you have trouble staying awake after you eat whether it be, breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Why not try slow deep breathing instead of turning to stimulants like caffeine. When we breathe deeply into the lower part of the belly (the area just below the belly button) we are inhaling into the bottom most part of the lungs. The highest concentration of avioli (air sacs) are located in this part of the lungs so when we inhale into this area of the lungs, the body has access to more oxygen and has more of it to send to the cells in our body. The extra oxygen that you get from those deep breaths can give you the boost you need to get through your day.

Yoga Nidra Guided Meditation for Insomnia - Yoga Palm Beach

Insomnia

Our lifestyles have caused an insomnia epidemic.

The inability to achieve a good night’s sleep is one of the biggest factors undermining our quality of life today.

A large percentage of the worlds population suffer from sleeping problems. Approximately a third of these have chronic insomnia which affects moods, physical health, relationships and careers.

Due to this epidemic of chronic sleeping disorders, the birth of or, maybe I should say a resurgence of yoga nidra, or deep replenishing sleep yoga has come about.

Yoga nidra, not only teaches students how to relax and sleep but also provides the knowledge and encouragement necessary so that students are able to transfer their yoga nidra experience into their daily life. They are able to maintain a calm mind, focus and balance through out their day.

In the West, more vigorous styles of yoga have found favour. However in the East for example India (known as the mother land of Yoga), their are a huge variety of yoga styles including the gentle style of pranayama (breath awareness exercises) as well as wakeful sleep, or the yoga of sleep. The regular practice of deep peaceful relaxation has for years been touted as one of the most beneficial practises you can do to improve mental health and  wellbeing.

Yoga Practise - Yoga Palm Beach

Yoga Practise

The foundation of yoga is a series of structured poses linked with your breathing. The benefits of regular practice include increased fitness and lower levels of stress and anxiety. A full yoga session should exercise every part of the body and should include pranayama (breath control practices), relaxation and meditation.

Yoga is an ancient Indian philosophy that dates back thousands of years. It was designed as a path to spiritual enlightenment, but in modern times, the physical aspects of Hatha yoga have found huge popularity as a gentle form of exercise and stress management. There are many different varieties of yoga, but each one essentially relies on structured poses (asanas) practised with breath awareness.

Researchers have discovered that the regular practice of yoga produces many health benefits, including increased fitness and normalisation of blood pressure. Yoga is a renowned antidote to stress. Over time, yoga practitioners report lower levels of stress and increased feelings of happiness and wellbeing. This is because concentrating on the postures and the breath acts as a powerful form of physical meditation.

Most yoga classes include some form of pre-meditation like yoga nidra, used for rest and relaxation. As well as spiritual meditations, the main focus being transcendental sound also known as yoga mantra meditations. These meditations are made up of beautiful combinations of the ancient names of the supreme. This type of meditation has always been an integral part of the ancient yoga system. The practise of which offers profound benefits ensuring the student moves forward spiritually. A well rounded yoga practise should include benefits for the body, the mind and also the essence of a person - the spiritual being. This is the ultimate trilogy in a truly healthy, holistic yoga

practise which includes body, mind and spirit.

Ride Your Bike - Yoga Palm Beach

The Benefits of Bike Ridinggrey dots

Bike riding is a popular sport, but many of us don’t find the time to go for many rides, even if we have a bike it usually sitting in the garage somewhere collecting dust!

A thirty minute bike ride will burn up about 8 kilojoules at a social pace, or 26 kj if you ride at 25 kph or faster. Compare that to 5kj for a slow walk or 9kj for half an hour of sit ups!

So bike riding is an effective form of exercise and can be part of a fitness or weight loss program. But there are other advantages as well.

* Unlike working out in a gym, bike riding will get you out in the fresh air and into different environments. You will be able to clear your mind and relax and enjoy yourself.

* Riding outside also exposes you to sunlight which is a natural source of vitamin D.

* Bike riding isn’t very stressful on most of your body, and it’s certainly less jarring than going for a run although a medium paced jog burns a similar amount of energy.

* Bike riding can be practical. Consider riding next time you need to visit a friend or maybe even use it as a way to get to work each day. Not only will you get some exercise, you’ll save petrol money, save the environment and may even save time.

* Make it social. It’s hard to chat whilst swimming or doing aerobics, but bike riding with a friend allows for chatting and you can have a break, stop for a picnic and relax at the end.

*Riding a bike with the rush of wind in your face can give a real sense of exhileration, release endorphins and make it so you feel better.

I really enjoy bike riding but I do find my muscles tighten up, that's why it's essential to stretch before riding and after riding also. Feels great to stretch your hips, ham strings and spine especially the lower back. If you enjoy bike riding make a point of stretching.

Yoga Breathing Benefits - Yoga Palm Beach

Raise your arms and Inhale

We very rarely pay attention to, or give a second thought to the way we breathe. Yoga practise builds body awareness. We are taught to focus on our breath, become aware of our breath, regulate our breath and so on. As you know we can't live without breathing, not for very long at least. We can live without food or water for a few days, BUT air ... I'm afraid we need it to live.  How we breathe can have a huge impact on our life and your health. Medical studies have shown that the simple act of deep breathing can have significant health benefits.

If we simply take a few moments to breathe deeply we can really improve our health:

Slow deep breathing helps reduce tension - If you find you are super stressed, take a break, take time out  and breath. Try 10 very slow deep breaths. You will quickly feel more relaxed. Deep breathing supplies the body with the oxygen we need to function. Slow deep breathing will infuse your body with oxygen, you will feel revitalised, less stressed and allot calmer.

Slow deep breathing helps reduce pain - Expectant mothers go to classes to learn breathing techniques to cope with the pain of giving birth. The midwives or doctors tell the soon to be 'mums' to slow the breathe down at certain times during their labour as this helps to focus, reduces pain, and helps with delivery. When you take deep breaths your body releases endorphins. Endorphins are your body's way of fighting pain.

Yoga Health - Yoga Palm Beach

Yoga asanas

Each posture, or asana, is held for a period of time and linked with breathing. Generally, a yoga session begins with gentle asanas and works up to the more vigorous or challenging postures. A full yoga session should exercise every part of the body and should include pranayama (breath control practices), relaxation and meditation. The different postures or asanas include:

  •     Lying postures
  •     Sitting postures
  •     Standing postures
  •     Inverted, or upside down postures.

The physical building blocks of yoga are the posture (asana) and the breath. A series of poses held in time with breathing.

Benefits include:
  • Cardiovascular system (heart and arteries) – asanas are isometric, which means they rely on holding muscle tension for a short period of time. This improves cardiovascular fitness and circulation.
  • Studies show that regular yoga practice may help normalise blood pressure.
  •  Digestive system – improved blood circulation and the massaging effect of surrounding muscles speeds up a sluggish digestion.
  • Musculo-skeletal – joints are moved through their full range of motion, which encourages mobility and eases pressure. The gentle stretching releases muscle tension and increases flexibility. Maintaining many of the asanas encourages strength and endurance. Weight-bearing asanas may help prevent osteoporosis, and may also help those already diagnosed with osteoporosis, practiced with care, under the supervision of a qualified yoga teacher. Long-term benefits include reduced back pain and improved posture.
  • Nervous system – improved blood circulation, easing of muscle tension and the act of focusing the mind on the breath all combine to soothe the nervous system. Long-term benefits include reduced stress and anxiety levels, and increased feelings of calm and wellbeing.
There is no doubt that Yoga asanas (when practiced safely) are incredibly effective in maintaining the health and wellbeing of our body. We hold classes in yoga and meditation regularly. Why don't you come and try yoga asanas for yourself, check our Timetable for a time that would suit you and come join in.
